We are about to have our Cast & Crew screening on July 28th. It's a very special moment to finally be able to share the film with everyone who put in so much effort to make it. We will definitely post pictures from the screening and let you know how it goes! We will also be meeting some of our Kickstarter supporters for the first time, which is very exciting.

We had an 18 day shoot that began mid-May of last year, shooting on location all over Los Angeles. Working on such a tight schedule with a modest-sized crew presented its challenges, but we had an incredibly dedicated team that gave it their all every day. When you're working on a micro-budget you can't afford to go into overtime and I credit our fantastic producers Jennifer Dubin and Cora Olson with keeping us on course throughout the entire shoot.

Half of our shoot days were spent at a wonderful assisted living facility where we worked alongside the residents, several of whom joined us during filming and are featured in the movie.

Once finished with production, we went straight into post with our incredibly talented editor, Tamara Meem. As we edited we started thinking about what kind of music should score the film and found amazing composers, Sam Jones and Alexis Marsh. You can check out their website here.

Last Day of Shooting

We are also very excited to finally announce that music from the Fleet Foxes will be in the film. They are a band that we greatly admire and we were thrilled when they agreed to let us use their music. You can check out the two songs, "He Doesn't Know Why" and "Montezuma."

The film is very close to being officially done, we still have a bit of sound mixing to do, which we will be doing with the fantastic team at Sonic Magic. We will keep you posted on what happens next!

Raising Funds on Kickstarter

Hey there!

We are so thrilled that our fundraising effort on Kickstarter was a success! We're now entering the pre-production phase, which means tons of meetings, trying to get everything lined up and ready to go. We will keep you posted on our progress! In the meantime, a lot of people have asked us about crowd funding and how we raised the money, so we thought we'd share our thoughts on it.

1) First, do tons of reasearch on Kickstarter. Find projects similar to yours, and study what is working for others, and what's not working. Contribute to other projects, see how they keep their backers updated on their progress.

2) Read Kickstarter's advice on how to set up a project. They know what they're talking about, they are the experts. One thing we took to heart was keeping our fundraising period relatively short. Plus, as they say on Kickstarter, people make their decisions quickly on the internet, so more time doesn't necessarily mean a greater chance of success.

3) Make a project video. You have to do this. People won't emotionally connect to your project if you don't show them what you're all about. Keep the video length short. If people can't get through the whole video, they might feel like they're not passionate enough about your project to contribute. Keep in my mind that after they watch the video, they're going to have to spend their time signing up for Kickstarter in order to pledge to your project.

4) Our most successful rewards incentives were at the $20 and $100 levels. From observation, this seems to be a common trend. Make sure your rewards at that level are really good!

5) Our project would not have been successful without facebook and twitter. If you are not on these, then sign up now before you launch your project! With the help of hundreds of people sharing our project on facebook and twitter, we reached our goal. It would not have happened otherwise.

6) Email blasts. When you first launch your project you want to inform everyone you know, but we've all gotten mass emails that we sort of ignore. A month before our project launched, I started writing personal emails to everyone I knew and saved them until launch day. Of course, you will sometimes have to mass email, but the more personal you can be, the better.

7) Before you launch, create a plan and schedule for your fundraising period. How will continue to promote this after week 1? Week 2? Essentially, try to create a roll-out plan, new things to announce, special limited incentives, new information. We did not exactly do this, but I really wish we had because once the fundraising starts, it feels like you're under water and you can't think as clearly! We were lucky that we had interviews come our way, so we were able to share those on a regular basis.

8) Try to write each of your backers a personal thank-you note when they contribute. I fell behind at a certain point, but I did write about 700 notes.

9) An observation: We were very lucky to have some extraordinarily generous donors contribute very large sums of money. We also had the experience of a donor fall through during the fundraising period. What we realized when this happened was that one person had a lot of power in our project and that was a very vulnerable position to be in. As you know, anyone can drop out at any point in fundraising (even after your fundraising is successful, people can still fall through, although it is a very low percentage, like 1%!), just be aware of this and perhaps choose your rewards levels with this in mind. You are more protected if you have many smaller donations than just one large donation.

10) If your project is socially-minded, try to find organizations with similar goals and see if they will promote your project on their website or with an email blast.

Those are the top ten things which come to mind, but if anyone has any questions, please feel free to post a comment!

48 Hours

I am just overwhelmed by what has happened on kickstarter in the last 48 hours. We have reached 18% of our goal!!! After months of planning, researching, and meetings, it has been wonderful to see the positive response towards our project. And the comments that people have posted on twitter and the kickstarter site have been so encouraging. We were even blogged about... twice! Three times!

Presently, I am editing the next interview with filmmaker, Marianna Palka, whose film, "Good Dick," went to Sundance in 2008. She shares wonderful insights about the process of making a film, I recommend it, especially if you are wearing multiple hats. She was the writer, director and actress!

I am continuing to brainstorm ways to get this project out into the world, to continue to get new backers. If anyone has ideas, please post a comment, would love to hear your thoughts!

And thank you to all for your support!

Twitter Classic Movie List

I recently asked people on Twitter what their favorite classic films are and here are the responses.
The process of getting any movie made is no small task and we are now starting a new leg of the journey. This road feels like home and there is no place we'd rather be.

This website will hopefully serve several purposes. First, it’s a way to start reaching out to our future audience and future collaborators; it takes a small army to make a movie! We decided to use a method called "crowd- funding" to raise money for the movie, which essentially means that the audience itself is the producer of this film. Pretty cool. It is a grass-roots effort. More on this later! Also, I am a first-time director, and want to learn as much as I can from filmmakers I admire before we start production, so I have started an interview series that is also on this site, where I talk with actors, writers, directors, cinematographers about some of their first filmmaking experiences. The list of guests who have already signed up is incredibly exciting!!! The first interview is with Roger Towne, screenwriter of such films as “The Natural” and “The Recruit,” and my Dad!

There have been several meetings about how to raise money for the film and that is when producers Cora Olson and Jen Dubin of Present Pictures, and I discovered the relatively new approach called crowd-funding. Basically the audience helps to produce it by sponsoring any amount they like. A little truly goes a long way. If you are interested in making a movie in this way yourself, I suggest checking out indiegogo.com and kickstarter.com. These are both crowd-funding sites and through them you can set up a very user- friendly site to raise funds. Also, if your project is socially-minded and not commercial in nature, then you may also be able to accept sponsorships through a non-profit organization such as Fractured Atlas, which works with indiegogo.com. Another wonderful resource for finding out more about crowd-funding is Peter Broderick’s website, www.peterbroderick.com. I went to a seminar of his and found it to be extremely informative. As of right now, I am a “contributor”/“producer” on such projects as “El Cosmonauta” (Spanish film), “The Bullying Project” (documentary about bullying in our schools), and “Audrey the Trainwreck” (a film that went to South by Southwest).

In order to get this site running, we had the help of some very talented artists. Todd Spiewak is the graphic designer of the site. We met several times to discuss the look of it, our biggest priority was to keep it user- friendly. Artist and filmmaker Nick Monsour designed the key art. It's an interesting task to create a poster for a film that doesn't yet exist, but if you want a brilliant mind working on it, then you want Nick. Check out his other incredible work at www.aureliaproductions.com.

As we prepare to make "I Am I," this blog will give a weekly play by play of what we're doing to make it all happen, from script rewrites to producer meetings to casting etc. We are so excited to begin this leg of the journey. Please, please, if you have any questions or advice, let us know! And also, if you are so inclined, sign up for our mailing list so that we can send you monthly updates on our progress. We will have a new interview posted every couple of weeks.

That’s all for now. Next interview coming up is with… or should I keep it a surprise???
