Is The Sony HDR-CX405 Right For You?

The Sony HDR-CX405 is definitely perfect for you if:

  • You are looking for an affordable video camera
  • You want settings that are easy to use
  • You want to record in crisp 1920 x 1080 resolution.

On the other hand, this high-end camcorder is not for you if:

  • Need WiFi Capabilities
  • Need internal memory

Build Quality

The camera is very compact and light, weighing in at only 6.7 ounces. It is built fairly well for the price of it, I would not suggest dropping it from any significant height, it is mostly made of plastic. The LCD screen on the HDR-CX405 is only 2.7 inches, which is quite small when compared to other video cameras of similar stature. Overall the quality of the camera will do the average consumer just fine, where it lacks in strength it makes up for in portability and weight.

Build Quality

Performance

What this camcorder lacks in design and features, it makes up for in its "price to performance ratio." There aren't many, if any at all that can produce such crisp video quality like the HDR-CX405 does for such a great price. It uses Sony's very own XAVC S format to record video in HD 50Mbps 1080p at 60p. It also supports the more conventional MP4 and AVCHD codecs. It does all of this at the aid of its 26.8 wide angle ZEISS lens, which produces an impressive video recording quality and adept control of the zoom features.

Features

Zoom Capabilities

It comes with the ability to zoom 30x with its optical zoom, which honestly isn't anything to boast home about in 2019. If it weren't for the HDR-CX405's Clear Image Zoom, I probably would not be writing a review on this camcorder. Clear Image Zoom allows for zooming up to 60x without losing much of any image quality. Another great thing about the Clear Image Zoom is that it does not change the size of the file either. Optical zoom is still the choice of most filmmakers because it will producer a sharper image, the processor is actually making new pixels to enhance image quality.

Easy To Use Settings

This video camera is great for beginners or younger individuals because it comes with a very user friendly interface which has a large amount of useful settings. One of the most useful settings when recording other individuals is the integrated face detection feature which can detect up to eight people. It can also tell the difference between adults and children, I assume this is done by relative height. The focus, exposure, and white balance is adjusted for each of the faces in the video, which can make a difficult shot relatively easy to make look good. Voice enhancements and noise reduction for white noise is also integrated when using the face detection mode.

Sony HDR-CX405 Features

Seven picture modes make it easy to make still pictures and recordings look as perfect as possible. The seven settings are very easy to use and most are self explanatory, although it may take some practice to master them. If you aren't sure which setting to use? No problem, the Intelligent Auto mode will automatically choose the right one for you! It selects one of the ten on-board modes, which include Tripod, Baby, Low light, Back light, Walk, Landscape, Spotlight, Macro, Portrait, and Twilight. The Intelligent Auto mode is super helpful and in turn can teach you what the "best" settings are for each scenario. This will lead you to having the ability to know what settings are needed to make the most professional looking video.

No More Shaky Videos

SteadyShot Image Stabilization is one of the most notable features on the HDR-CX405. It has the ability to smoothing out shaky shots while you are recording. This is great for anyone filming longer videos without a tripod, or are zooming in quite frequently. Even the slightest movement while zoomed in can make the final product look very unsteady and at times hard to watch.

Three-way Shake Cancelling is another one of Sony's "anti shake" features which uses electronic roll stability. Both of these settings combine to make each shot look very smooth, with little to no inadvertent movement. Even without purchasing or using a tripod, the user is able to make professional looking films without having any professional experience.

Accessories

Sony HDR-CX405 Accessories

The accessories that come with the camera alone aren't anything special. It comes with a removable battery, USB cable with AC adapter, and an HDMI cord. This is everything that comes with just the camcorder on Amazon.

If the accessories that come with the camera alone seem lackluster then I would highly suggest spending a little bit more to get the Deluxe Accessory Kit! Which comes with some great things such as a rechargeable lithium ion battery, a table tripod, and other great goodies that will make the quality of your production higher and easier.

Conclusion

After reviewing the Sony HDR-CX405 there are a few things that need to be said about its features and capabilities. First of all, if you are looking for a camera with WiFi integration and internal memory, then this is probably not the perfect camcorder for you. On the other hand, if you are someone on a budget looking for a video camera that can record in HD and have a large amount of easy to use settings that will improve the quality of video, then the HDR-CX405 is probably a great choice!
